Both the Catahoula lineage and the origins of the name "Catahoula" are uncertain, but there are various theories. One theory suggests that the Catahoula is the result of Native Americans having bred their own dogs with molossers and greyhounds brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century.

The French told of strange-looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp.

The breed is sometimes referred to as the "Catahoula Hound" or "Catahoula Leopard Hound" because of its spots, although it is not a true hound but a cur. It is also called the "Catahoula Hog Dog", reflecting its traditional use in hunting wild boar.

Catahoulas have been used to hunt prey from squirrels all the way to bears. They are mostly used for hog and deer hunting and keeping cattle or livestock in place.

Amazing Colors and Patterns

Catahoulas have always been bred for working and hunting abilities rather than appearance. The Catahoula is a unique breed because there is no breed standard for coat or eye color. Sizes also vary between Catahoulas, females being smaller than males.

Puppies will often vary in colors within a single litter, ranging from solid colors to spotted puppies.
